What Is a Virtual Health and Wellness Coach? And Do You Need One?
You probably already know a lot about what supports good health. The gap between knowing what to do and living it out is where a health and wellness coach can help.
Dr Korede Olanrewaju

You probably already know a lot about what supports good health.
Eat well. Move your body. Get enough sleep. Manage stress. Take your medications as prescribed. Make time for the people and things that matter.
So why can making changes still feel so difficult?
Sometimes the problem isn't a lack of information.
It's the gap between knowing what to do and actually being able to live it out in your real life.
That's one place health and wellness coaching can help.
What Is Health and Wellness Coaching?
Health and wellness coaching is a client-centered process that helps people make self-directed, sustainable changes related to their health and well-being.
The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching describes health and wellness coaches as partners who help clients identify their own goals, draw on their strengths and resources, and develop actions that fit their values and lives.
In ordinary language, a health coach is someone who helps you slow down, think clearly about what matters, understand what may be getting in the way, and make changes that actually fit your life.
That is different from simply being given another list of things you should do.
At VOW Coaching, we don't begin with:
"Here's what you should do."
We often begin with a different question:
"What's happening here?"
Because before we can decide what to change, it can help to understand what is actually going on.
What Does a Health Coach Actually Do?
A health coach doesn't take over your health decisions.
Instead, coaching creates space for you to explore them.
A health coach may help you:
- clarify what you actually want to change
- explore what matters to you
- identify barriers that make change difficult
- recognize patterns in your everyday life
- build confidence around making changes
- set goals and action steps
- experiment with different approaches
- notice what is and isn't working
- learn from your experiences
- stay accountable to choices you've made
The coach serves as a partner rather than a director. The client remains the expert on their own life and takes ownership of the decisions they make.
That means a coaching conversation might sound very different from a traditional advice-giving conversation.
Instead of:
"You need to exercise three times a week."
You might hear:
"What have you noticed about movement in your life lately?"
Or:
"What makes it easier for you to move, and what tends to get in the way?"
The difference may seem small.
But it changes who is doing the thinking.
What Is a Virtual or Online Health Coach?
A virtual health coach provides coaching remotely rather than meeting with you in a physical office.
Online health coaching can take place through video conversations or other virtual communication, allowing you to meet with your coach from a private, comfortable location.
For some people, that makes coaching easier to fit into everyday life.
You don't have to drive to another appointment.
You don't have to add another commute to an already full week.
You can have a meaningful conversation about your health while remaining in the context of your actual life.
And that context matters.
Your health doesn't exist in an office.
It exists in your kitchen.
In your relationships.
At work.
In the middle of a stressful week.
When you're tired.
When your plans fall apart.
When your child needs you.
When you know what you intended to do but somehow didn't do it.
Virtual coaching allows the conversation to meet you in the life you're actually living.
How Is Health Coaching Different From Medical Care?
Health coaching and medical care are different, but they can complement one another.
Medical care addresses medical conditions and may involve diagnosis, testing, treatment, medication, and other clinical decisions.
Health coaching focuses on the person's goals, choices, behavior change, experiences, and the practical work of making sustainable changes.
A health coach does not independently diagnose medical conditions, interpret medical data, prescribe or deprescribe medication, prescribe exercise, create meal plans, or provide psychotherapy simply by virtue of being a health coach. These boundaries are part of the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching's scope of practice.
So health coaching isn't meant to replace your doctor.
It can provide a different kind of support alongside appropriate medical care.
For example, your physician might recommend increasing physical activity because of a health condition.
The medical recommendation answers an important question:
What does my health require?
Coaching can help you explore another question:
How might I actually make this change in my life?
But I Already Know What I'm Supposed to Do
This is one of the reasons people seek coaching.
You may already know that you want to exercise more.
You may know that your sleep needs attention.
You may know that your eating habits have changed.
You may know that stress is affecting you.
You may know that you want to spend more time with your family.
You may even know exactly what you should be doing.
And yet, knowing isn't always enough.
There can be a large space between information and action.
Maybe you've tried before.
You started a new routine.
You followed a plan.
You were motivated for a while.
Then life happened.
You got busy.
Something unexpected came up.
You missed a few days.
And eventually, you found yourself thinking:
"I need to start over."
If that sounds familiar, you may not need more information.
You may need space to understand what keeps happening.
Take two minutes to pause
You don't have to figure anything out right now. Take two minutes to reflect on what you've been noticing in your own health and life.

You don't necessarily need a health coach.
But coaching may be worth exploring if:
- You know what you want to change, but you're struggling to make it happen. You understand the goal. The difficulty is turning it into something sustainable.
- You're tired of starting over. You've tried plans, challenges, apps, diets, exercise routines, or accountability systems, and you're looking for something different.
- You have plenty of information but need space to think. Sometimes another article, podcast, or recommendation isn't what you need. You need someone to help you slow down and explore what you're actually experiencing.
- Your health goals have to fit into a complicated life. Work, family, relationships, responsibilities, sleep, stress, and your environment all influence the way you live. Your health doesn't happen in isolation.
- You want support without someone taking over. You don't want someone managing your life. You want a partner who can help you think, explore, notice patterns, and stay accountable to choices you have made.
What Happens in an Online Health Coaching Session?
A coaching conversation doesn't have to begin with a perfect goal or a detailed action plan.
It might begin with something that happened during your week.
Maybe you intended to exercise but didn't.
Maybe you've been exhausted.
Maybe you've been eating differently than you intended.
Maybe something happened at work.
Maybe a relationship has been affecting the way you're caring for yourself.
Maybe you noticed something about your body.
Rather than immediately jumping to solutions, we might slow down and explore:
- What happened?
- What did you notice?
- What were you experiencing?
- What have you already tried?
- What matters to you about this?
- What would you like to explore?
And from there, you decide where the conversation goes.
The goal isn't for the coach to figure you out.
The goal is to create enough space for you to see more clearly and make your own choices.
Is Health Coaching About Fixing Yourself?
No.
In fact, sometimes the constant pressure to fix ourselves can become part of the problem.
We notice something we don't like.
We immediately decide it needs to change.
Then we search for the right solution.
A better diet.
A better routine.
More discipline.
A new app.
A new plan.
Another restart.
But what if, sometimes, the first step isn't fixing?
What if it's paying attention?
- What is actually happening?
- What have you been experiencing?
- What matters to you?
- What have you stopped noticing?
- What might you learn if you slowed down before deciding what to do?
That's a central idea behind VOW's School of Attention.
Notice. Explore. Discern. Practice. Witness.
Not as a ladder you have to climb, but as a rhythm of living that we return to again and again.

VOW means Voice of Wisdom.
VOW Coaching is a Christ-centered health and wellness coaching practice built around a simple idea:
We need to see truly to choose truly.
My role isn't to tell you how to live your life.
It's to create space for you to slow down, pay attention, explore what you're noticing, understand what matters to you, and make thoughtful choices about how you want to live.
I am a physician and a certified health and wellness coach, so my medical background informs how I understand health. But coaching is not the same thing as medical care.
My faith shapes how I understand health, dignity, grace, purpose, and the way we care for our lives. But coaching isn't about spiritual performance or measuring how well someone is doing spiritually.
It's about creating space to pay attention to the whole of life and explore what it means to care well for the life God has entrusted to us.
So, Do You Need a Health Coach?
Maybe.
You may already have everything you need.
You may simply need time.
You may need a conversation with your doctor.
You may need rest.
You may need a practical resource.
Or you may be at a point where having someone alongside you would help you see things differently and make changes that fit your actual life.
A health coach isn't there to become the person who tells you what to do.
You are still the expert on your life.
But sometimes having the right kind of conversation can help you hear yourself more clearly.
You may not need another plan.
You may need a place to slow down.
A place to pay attention.
A place to explore what is happening before deciding what comes next.
That's what VOW Coaching is here to offer.
Want to explore this kind of space with a coach?
VOW Coaching offers one-on-one virtual health and wellness coaching for people who want space to slow down, understand what they're noticing, and consider what comes next.
